Lindsay Whalen
Known for being a Minnesota basketball icon and one of the most decorated players in women’s basketball history, Lindsay Whalen’s legacy resonates far beyond the court. With strong core values and a passion for inspiring others to blaze their own trails in their communities, Lindsay continues to exemplify qualities that make her a great partner of Blaze.
Originally from Hutchinson, Minnesota, Whalen began her competitive basketball career at Hutchinson High School where she led her team to three consecutive conference basketball championships. In 2018, the high school gymnasium was renamed ‘Whalen Gymnasium’ to honor her legacy.
Whalen continued her basketball career and studies at the University of Minnesota, becoming Minnesota’s all-time leading scorer and holding school career records in points, scoring average, and free throws made. In 2004, Lindsay led Minnesota to its first-ever Final Four appearance, and a year later, the University retired her number 13 jersey. From 2018 to 2023, Lindsay was the team’s head coach, becoming the fifth coach in Golden Gopher history to win over twenty games in their first season.
During Lindsay’s time in the WNBA, she was selected by the Connecticut Sun in the first round of the draft in 2004. She held the team record for most assists and led the team to two WNBA Finals appearances. In 2010, she returned to her home state and joined the Minnesota Lynx, winning four WNBA titles over nine years and being the first player to have their jersey number retired in Lynx history.
Lindsay’s basketball career went international when she was a key player on the USA Women’s National Team, winning back-to-back gold medals in 2012 and 2016. Her talent also led to her being inducted into the prestigious Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022.
